Hi, I’m Sara Linden.
I’m a Colorado-based bonseki artist and educator whose practice explores landscape, seasonality, impermanence, and attentive observation through traditional Japanese arts.
I enjoy deepening my own perspective of my bonseki practice by ongoing formal study of Omotesenke chadō (way of tea) and Ikenobo ikebana (art of floral design), alongside developing study of sumi-e ink painting and kōdō (way of fragrance). Together, these studies help me broaden my understanding of season, space, material, gesture, and the relationship between an artwork and the environment in which it is encountered.
I am committed to the cultural stewardship and contemporary transmission of bonseki in the United States, working in partnership with museums, community organizations, and recovery-focused spaces. I offer bonseki instruction, including workshops at the Denver Art Museum, the Arvada Center for Arts & Humanities, and upcoming events at the Denver Botanical Gardens, Pasadena’s Storrier Stearns Japanese Garden, and the Japanese Friendship Gardens in San Diego. My work also extends into therapeutic and recovery settings, including Denver Health and The Gathering Place, through grant-funded community programming supported by RedLine Contemporary Art Center and the Andy Warhol Foundation.
In addition to in-person teaching, I am developing educational and media initiatives to expand awareness of this rare art form in the West. My current work explores how bonseki can remain rooted in traditional practice while entering contemporary contexts through exhibition, cultural education, site-responsive installation, and intimate collaborations with chefs, gardens, hosts, and other artists. Across these settings, I approach bonseki as a way of cultivating a more nuanced awareness of landscape and season in order to deepen an encounter or experience.
