July brings heat that clings to the skin and slows the day. But, in the stillness of early morning, before the sun rises high, and when I stroll by the creek – the air still feels like cool silk against my skin. I think that’s when I most clearly feel the wistful beauty of Tanabata, the Star Festival.
This bonseki work was inspired by the tale of Orihime and Hikoboshi, lovers separated by the Milky Way, granted only one midsummer meeting across the stars. In the swath of white sand, you might glimpse the river of heaven, or perhaps the shimmer of a wish released into the sky.
In this season of light and longing, may you find a moment of stillness… and maybe a breeze to cool you.
